NFL FLAG Football Program
Started in 1996, the NFL FLAG Football Program is an outreach program sponsored by the National Football League. Towns and communities across the nation have the opportunity to offer this program providing young players, both girls and boys, a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-contact, continuous action while learning lessons of teamwork.
NFL FLAG Football groups players into brackets determined by the player's grade as of September 1 of the current year. All of the playing rules are established and set by the National Football League. In addition, the NFL oversees that each local program has the proper insurance coverage and offers additional insurance as part of the league registration. The NCFFL launched this website in 2009 to expand communications among the league players and parents.
NCFFL - New Canaan Flag Football League
The New Canaan FLAG Football League was started by New Canaan resident Phil Davis with the assistance of the New Canaan Recreation Department and a board of local volunteer parents including Craig Hunt, Steve Dayton, Nick Williams and Morgan Edwards.
Started in 2005, the NCFFL began it's first season with one 9-11 age division of 4 teams totaling 36 players. In 2006, the league doubled in size to 8 teams in one 9-11 age division. The 2007 season saw the first expansion of a new 12-14 age division.
Today, the 2024 season has 7 divisions 2 grade 3-4 grade, 5-6 grade 7-9 grade and and now a girl's league from grades 2-4, 5-7, totaling over 350 players and 65 volunteer coaches.
The program is designed to educate young people, both girls and boys, about football while emphasizing participation and sportsmanship. Players learn skills and lessons that help them succeed both on and off the field. Uniforms jerseys are licensed NFL logo apparel with selected NFL teams in each of the age divisions. Games are played on the synthetic turf field by the Waveny Water Tower on Saturdays. . Practices are held at Waveny, South School, East School, West School and Irwin Park during the week.
Following a regular season schedule of play, a post season playoff format will determine the league champions. Players, parents and coaches are asked to follow a code of conduct as released by the National Football League, NFL Flag Organization and the New Canaan Recreation Department.
